General presentation

The south-western part of the garden has been laid out in the English style. A small turret, probably once used as a dovecote, has been placed at the top of a mound. A sculpture in the round, signed by Gossin Frères, probably represents Ceres.

In front of the low wall surrounding the garden, a cenotaph was built by the Saint-Médard avant-garde in memory of Maurice Gallé, who fell in the First World War.

In contrast to the Jardin à l'Anglaise, the Jardin à la Française gives the image of nature under man's control. Located to the north-east, it is composed of symmetrically arranged parterres and Medici-shaped flowerbeds. Placed at the centre of the garden, the well was an essential element, providing the water needed for personal hygiene, cleaning the house and eating.
