Abbey of St. Nicholas

For over 900 years, l'église Saint-NicolasThe Abbey of Saint-Nicolas, also known as the Abbatiale Saint-Nicolas, overlooks the Oise valley from the top of a rocky promontory, like a fortified castle.

This priory church is a masterpiece of transitional artThis was the pivotal period between Romanesque and Gothic art.

Until the Revolution, the church belonged to the Cluniac monastery of Saint-LeuIt is now privately owned and can be visited during the Heritage Days.

When can you visit the Abbey of Saint-Nicolas?

Rarely open to the public, you can still discover the interior of the Abbey of Saint-Nicolas in Saint-Leu-d'Esserent. Sunday afternoons from June to Septemberfor self-guided tours. Explanatory panels and a booklet accompany your visit (available in French/English).

Outside these hours, a glass airlock allows you to admire the interior of the church, every day, all year round.

The Abbey Church is situated in a medieval quarter where you can admire the medieval gateway to the old town as you wander along the paths. Prioryas well as Banvin Cellar where the monks stored their barrels of wine.
