From the 12 sept. 2026
Château de Chantilly 60500 CHANTILLY
from 10h00 to 17h00
An artist much appreciated by the Duc d'Aumale, who commissioned a painting from her, Rosa Bonheur visited the Château de Chantilly several times. A passionate horsewoman, it is only natural that France's largest museum dedicated to this animal should pay tribute to her.
Although Rosa Bonheur painted a wide variety of animals, the horse seemed to occupy a special place, as demonstrated by the resounding success of her famous painting The Horse Market in 1853. The artist studied them rigorously in their natural environment, but also in fairs and abattoirs, depicting them with a science of form and movement rarely seen before. A horse owner herself, Rosa Bonheur was inspired by her horses, which became the muses of many of her paintings. Combining drawings, paintings, photographs and rare archives, the exhibition reveals the creative process that enabled her to capture, with a unique sensitivity, the power, grace and individuality of the horses she depicted.
Organised in two parts, at the Musée Condé and the Musée vivant du Cheval, this event looks at Rosa Bonheur's relationship with Chantilly and her interest in the animal that is king of the town: the horse.
