Frédéric Mutillod

Trainer at the Atelier de la Pierre d'Angle in Saint-Maximin

When you walk through the doors of l'Atelier de la Pierre d'Angle in Saint-MaximinIt is impossible to miss the monumental works (such as this replica of the organ staircase of Notre-Dame de Paris or the life-size replica of the porch of the church in Thiverny [https://www.creilsudoise-tourisme.fr/jexplore/#thiverny]) made by the students who have succeeded one another. Meeting with the man who trained themHe is a stone enthusiast, passionate about his job as a trainer: Frédéric Mutillod.

Frédéric, the trainer

It all started in Lyon. As a child, Frédéric lived above two shops: a wooden head cutter of Guignols, the Lyon puppets, and a stone cutter. The stonemason must have hit harder, because that's where Frédéric went and where he was able to get a job. develops his passion for the profession he will later practice.

At the age of 16, he passed a CAP Stonemason and then makes its journey  in FranceHe will discover the different techniques for cutting the different stones in the different regions. He meets lava stone, granite, sandstone, marble and coarse sedimentary limestonewhich the very famous Stone of Saint-Maximin (and the surrounding area!), known worldwide as the Pierre de Paris.

Year after year, site after site, Frédéric improves his skills to managing a renovation company for historical monuments in Bayonne. But he no longer touches the stone, while enduring long days at a frantic pace... Until the day when a superb opportunity is offered to him.

In the 2010s, the Mayor of Saint-Maximin wishes to revitalise the stone work in the municipality and offer training as a tailor. He approached the Atelier de la Pierre d'Angle, an association that trains in stone cutting in Brignoles, in the Var. Some time later, l'Atelier numéro 2 moves to Saint-Maximinon a piece of land made available by the town hall! Another Frédéric, Milleville by name, in charge of the Ouachée and Corpechot quarry workshop in Saint-Maximin, brings Frédéric (ours) into the equation. Frédéric (still ours), rediscover the joy of working with stone (that of the South of the Oise, which he has shaped so much throughout France, without really knowing its origins) and discovers a a passion: that of a trainer !

As Frédéric says so beautifully, since that moment, he restores people by passing on his knowledge.

L'Atelier de la Pierre d'Angle, training courses

The Cornerstone Workshop [https://hautsdefrance.apprentis-auteuil.org/editorial/pole-formation-insertion/atelier-pierre-dangle/] opens its doors in 2014 and then proposes a training course, that of Stonemason [https://hautsdefrance.apprentis-auteuil.org/files/2022/01/Fiche-de-formation-complete_TP-Tailleur-de-pierre.pdf]. During 8 months12 apprentices discover the ancestral techniques of the cathedral builders, and learn how to draw a blueprint, cut, carve (by hand, not with machines!), lay, seal, patinate and harmonise the stone. They become familiar with their tools The point, the pointerolle, the chisel, the sledgehammer, the chaser, the square, the metre or the pencil.

At the end of their training, a Professional Title 3 (equivalent to the CAP), is awarded following an examination lasting 6 hours during which the student must carve his work.

Subsequently, from good professional opportunities await the winnersMany companies are looking for the skills they will have acquired at the Workshop. Previous sessions include, some of our former students are now working on beautiful sites as the renovation of the Château de Villers-Cotterêtswhich will host the Cité internationale de la langue française [https://www.cite-langue-francaise.fr/...] or the one for the restoration of the Château de Creil [https://www.creil.fr/le-chateau-et-la-salle-des-gardes-ancien-chateau-fort]. Others participated in the cleaning of Notre-Dame in Parisafter the terrible fire of 2019.

Did you know that?

You can see one of the superb creations of the Atelier de la Pierre d'Angle at the reception of the Creil Sud Oise Tourist Office: on stone wall of Saint-Maximin. Very educationalIt allows you to visualise the different pruning techniquesbut also of discover the art of heraldry (the science of coats of arms) through the representation, in relief, of the 4 colours of the logo of the Creil Sud Oise Tourist Office: black, green, yellow and blue. A particularly unique piece not to be missed, the wall also incorporates a sedimented stone in a very curious way... Come to the Office to discover it and understand its origin!

In 2016, the centre will have a new training course that of the masonry in old buildings [https://hautsdefrance.apprentis-auteuil.org/files/2022/01/Fiche-de-formation-complete_Titre-Pro-MB.pdf]. Pascal is in charge of training and preparing the 12 students, during 6 monthsThey will have to make a formwork, a stone wall and a plastering with old materials.

Since 2018, the Atelier de la Pierre d'Angle has been hosting integration projectsThe project is managed by Philippe, a technical supervisor, and Carole, a socio-professional support worker, assisted by Marthe. Thus, through workcamps commissioned by professionals, associations or communities, these people learn a trade and resume a stable life path.

In 2021, the Apprentices of AuteuilCatholic foundation recognised as being of public utilitywhich works to support and re-mobilise young people in difficulty, integrates the Atelier de la Pierre d'Angle into its Carlo Acutis training and integration centre in Picardy. The individualised support offered by the teams enables trainees to find employment after the course.
