We can admire the suprising narthex, a kind of closed porch preceding the portal, which is <strong>a particularity of the Cluniac churches<\/strong>richly decorated with sublime sculptures of <strong>gargoyles <\/strong>and other fantastic beast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inside,<strong> its dimensions are even more impressive<\/strong> and does not leave one indifferent: the discrepancy between the level of the portal and that of the rose window stands out, most certainly due to the adaptation of the Abbey Church's construction plans to those of an older parish church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At dawn, during summer, the <strong>sun floods the nave with a golden light,<\/strong>revealing the genius of the <strong>builders <\/strong>who cut out large openings and that of the <strong>stained-glass masters<\/strong> who filled them with the colours of the territory's DNA: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.creilsudoise-tourisme.fr\/en\/jexplore\/must-haves\/maison-de-la-pierre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stone<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-1 wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image The city centre of <strong>Saint-Leu-d'Esserent is full of medieval treasures and landmarks.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\t\t\t        <\/div>\n\n\t\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2>The medieval quarter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On our way to the Abbatiale Church of Saint Nicholas, the narrow streets and alleys immerse us in a <strong>medieval atmosphere<\/strong> with the <strong>remains of the Cluniac Priory<\/strong> surrounding the church and the <strong>Banvin Cellar<\/strong> below, once used by monks to store their wine casks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>The Priory<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The city of <strong>Priory<\/strong>now privately owned, contains <strong>underground passageways that can only be visited during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.creilsudoise-tourisme.fr\/en\/agenda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">European Heritage Days<\/a><\/strong>.
